3 Tips to Save Even More at the Gas Pump

1. Keep Your Tires Inflated: Cold air can really affect your tire inflation. In cold weather tires can become deflated much easier, meaning you may have to fill them more often. If you don’t keep those tires properly inflated, FuelEconomy.gov says you could be wasting as much as 6 cents per gallon of gas.

2. Change Your Oil and Air Filter Regularly: This past weekend I had to drive two kids back to college after winter break. I put more than 350 miles on my little Subaru Impreza, which gets an impressive 35 miles per gallon on a good day. That means that I should have been able to make both trips and only fill up once. But that didn’t hold true, because my car is overdue for an oil change and a new air filter, which I know affected my fuel efficiency. That’s not me making stuff up either. According to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, replacing a clogged air filter can improve a vehicle’s gas mileage by 10%.

3. Don’t Idle: Letting your car idle for an hour burns through between .16 and .39 gallons of gas, according to study results on the U.S. Department of Energy website. I’m sure that when you’re warming your car up in the morning, you probably don’t leave it idling for 60 minutes, but what about 15 or 20 minutes? How much gas are you wasting, just to ensure you get into a toasty warm car? Some experts say that with today’s advanced technology under the hood, most cars only need 30 seconds to warm up.
