KEEPING IT COOL: HOW TO AVOID ENGINE OVERHEATING

The malfunction indicator light of “temperature” on the dashboard casts a glow when engine overheating is imminent. Left alone, the liquid in the radiator boils over and smoke eventually escapes from under the hood. To avoid this unpleasant situation, here are some tips:

1. Get a new battery
It is advisable to replace a three-year old battery as a preventive maintenance. The older the battery gets, the more it can get stressed easily in extreme temperatures.

2. Turn off the air conditioner
If the temperature light starts to glow, turn the air conditioner off immediately and open the windows. If the light stays on, turn the temperature control to the hottest setting to redirect some heat trapped in the cooling system.

3. Fresh coolant
Equip the auto with fresh coolant to prepare for the summer. The radiator must also be checked for corrosion.

4. Bring water
Remember to keep a huge jug of water in the car. It can come in handy when a radiator leak happens.

5. Have the cooling service checked
Make sure bring the car to a mechanic or dealer to make sure that the air conditioner system is working right. Do this once a year or once in two years.
